college break will be coming up soon and I'll help him pay his way - but where to go for the most life for our budget? I've suggested alternate lifestyle retreats, monistraies, trips abroad, or just getting in his can and going. Any other ideas? I don't want his life to be wasted like mine was.

That's up to him. Any of these are possibilities - I'd say the most broadening for me has been visiting other cultures, whether that is the Mayan culture of Yucatan Mexico, or Jamaica, or Europe (a favorite of mine). Any of these are doable - Europe is inexpensive in the fall and backpacking and visiiting hostels are a great way to see it on a budget. But the Euro is high right now. Mexico is always inexpensive - check out backpacker hotels with grass shacks right on the beach in Tulum for example.

Just a few ideas.

One more issue - why not get out there yourself? If you have a 20 year old son, your life is not wasted, it's still in progress. After his break YOU get out there and into the hostels (Hostelling international has a discount for "youth" over 55 I believe - and very low rates for those under 55, whatever category you belong in.) YOU go see the world too. It is not too late!

You could send him to Europe on a backpacking trip...ride the trains at night...this lets you avoid the cost of a hotel or hostel for the night. There are alos a lot of missionary trips. Search for that on the internet. There is some cost involved, but its minimal in comparison to traveling as a tourist. Good luck.
