Are you kidding? It's one of our ugliest realities. Female infanticide is a huge problem, especially in the north (I think somewhere in Punjab .. sorry don't have the stats) where the male-female ratio is horribly skewed because people do illegal sex-determination tests and abort the female foetuses, or else kill the girl child after she is born.

In poorer families girls are less likely to be sent to be school (cos they're needed at home to look after other kids or the house or else be farmed out to work as domestic labour)

Girls are seen as a burden because they have to be "married off" or as a risk just because of their vulnerability to sexual predators ..

Girls get less nutrition than boys cos parents tend to feed the boys better.

Girls get pulled out of school earlier cos it's not considered that important for them to get an education cos they'll just get married anyway.

People assume there is something wrong with a woman who doesn't get married or doesn't have children. It's usually considered the woman's fault if there are problems conceiving even if medically it's the man's problem. Also giving birth to girls is the woman's fault, never the man's! (Even though its scientifically proven that its the man's contribution of chromosomes that determines if the foetus will become male or female).

I could go on and on. Of course this is not an absolute .. there are exceptions and nowadays attitudes are changing .. but this is pretty much the norm. We are a horribly patriarchal society.

Ask any Indian, male or female, this question: Who was the most powerful head of state India ever had?

You will get the answer "Indira Gandhi"

She was a widow when she got elected as the head of state. She was defeated thoroughly when she misused that position. She was elected again after a few years.

Gender discrimination is a myth in most advanced societies. I don’t think any male or female born and living in a family will ever discriminate a person based on "gender" alone. Everybody has parents and siblings. It is other conditions that force majority to discriminate women. For example I believe the war infested condition of Afghanistan and the absence of any governing/judiciary system made people accept fanatics like Taliban and they became powerful. If things were better, nobody will listen to such bs.

Its not a myth, especially for the lower classes where women are married at a very early age cause they are seen as a problem. The birth statistics you cited are alarming.

In some parts of India, women have high rates of illiteracy and have very little opportunity for education. These are the most overpopulated areas, might I add, since they have nothing else to do but procreate.
