Whatever be the purpose of life... it can simply be known by hearing the sweet small inner voice of our soul atman within. It is our soul atman that is the master and controller of the body and not vice versa. It is not within the capability of the body to manifest a soul atman. The goal of life also belongs to our soul atman and never the body.

Ever since our soul atman started on its cosmic journey of 8.4 million manifestations (an earthly abode of 96.4 million years)... the goal of every soul atman always remains the same... reaching the end of cosmic life... the 8.4 millionth manifestation! But what of the individual manifestations the goal of which would vary with each manifestation.

As cosmic life proceeds ahead... every soul atman manifests body after another! In every human form... the body... The goal of soul atman remains distinct. Dominated by our ego most human beings suppress the voice of our soul atman. In such circumstances one fails to abide by the goal of our soul atman and loses track of life!

Human beings who abide by dictates of the soul atman within... follow the right goal of life and ultimately master their destiny! The distinct voice of our soul atman can only be heard by one following the path of absolute truthfulness... never otherwise! Bogged by wanton desires and greed for materialistic riches most human beings never care for the real purpose of life!

Knowing the purpose of life... having a goal in life is journey half covered. Like the separate pieces of a puzzle... every individual human being has a purpose in life! In absence of a single missing piece of puzzle... the entire puzzle does not complete! In absence of a purpose in life... the life of human beings also reduces to that of an animal.

Every human being has been endowed by power of discrimination by Almighty God... something that distinguishes us from animals. Mounted with this power of discrimination... human beings can easily search for the true purpose in life. Every one in the mortal world need not travel the spiritual path although it forms the ultimate purpose of life.

Whatever be our purpose in life... we shall always succeed in life only when we indulge in something dear to our heart... pursuing which we lose track of time. Life is not simply to be passed by... it must be lived in a meaningful way... the very purpose why God Almighty made the form of human beings... the highest manifest stage in the cosmic life cycle!

We must always remember... only as human beings do the soul atman within regain its original pure pristine form. When human beings reach the stage of enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and finally salvation (moksha)... does the soul atman liberate finally from the cycle of birth and death forever. Thereafter it is a direct journey into the kingdom of God (aka Baikuntha in Hinduism). More on purpose of life - http://www.godrealized.org/life/purpose_driven_life.html

Yeah, everything must have a purpose because everything does have a purpose. Whether or not we know what that purpose is. Things or People either have a direct or indirect purpose. With things(objects) those purposes are usually more direct i.e. the paper cups purpose is to hold liquids. While people have a more indirect purpose(usually) which is usually in the way we affect others. People can do something in the here and now, or leave a legacy that will effect others. People can never belittle the effect they have on everything just by the simple actions that they do. Simply put every action has a reaction. So usually a purpose is unknown and even thought thats the case, the purpose is still being carried out.

I believe in God. I believe that everything I do may have a consequence which affects my life after death, but I also believe that not everything in life has a purpose.
We can create a purpose - for example, I sit and watch TV to unwind, or because I want to learn, or simply because I have nothing to do.
I keep a journal - I have no purpose for it, infact I don't want anyone ever to read it, but I could say I write it to empty my head of things that worry me.
I think things have a purpose if the person involved has a need and that the activity acheives or fulfills that need.

I hate philosophy. I do not think there is any purpose in me hating it as I still engage in it.

Recent studies ( Chicago research Institute May 2007 and Boston Institute for advanced studies June 2006) have concluded that while there are man made purposes, in the bigger picture there is none. Sorry to disappoint you. Still at least now you know you cannot fail. A purpose implies a goal, a end. Life does not end so no purpose. Simple really.

Everything I see in life makes me see more and more that everything has a purpose. We may not know or see the purpose in all things, but then centuries ago we didn't see the order in chaos either.

Look at fractals. Take the fern for example. A fern is a perfectly easy fractal to see, and seeing that is amazing! Everything would not be so intricately designed without purpose.

We, by our actions have the ability to create a purpose in some life event. Even our sleep has a purpose. So I must say yes to your question.

I believe in God so I believe that life has purpose.
Does everything in life have purpose? I don't know.. Somethings are just pretty. Other things are purely practical. And some things in life are because of people's free will... so anything is possible.
I think we find out how the world works by getting to know the creator. The world is clearly created. The more one looks at the design of the world the more one sees how amazing it is... there is no way that everything just happened by chance.

Everything; including what we do, think or feel is valid, but don't necessarily have a purpose... something just ARE.

Trying to find a purpose for everything makes life very analytical. Sometimes "we" have to just let thing "be". After all; we are human beings... not human doings!

We just ARE! And some things are beyond logical explanations or descriptions. But that doesn't mean they have no purpose.

yes everything in life must have a purpose - should i dress this wound with disinfectant : right or wrong ? should i boil the milk before consuming it - right or wrong ? should i built a brick or a wooden house - right or wrong ? should i have a baby now or not - right or wrong? everything we do is based on a purpose . There is no other way , you exist but you cannot shy away from the purpose of why you exist. Afterall you are not a cat or dog - right or wrong? And how do u know this - the answers should come from your mind , that mind which is devoted to the pursuit of that which is "right ".

If you define "purpose" as having a meaning similar to "function", you could be right. After all, the leaves falling off a tree function as fertilizer when they decay. If you want to call that the leaf's "purpose". so be it.

But if you define "purpose" as something more human-centric, then I disagree Some stuff is just random coincidence, and doesn't mean anything or have any purpose. It just happens. The stock market goes up and down. I don't think there is any intent or purpose behind it to teach me a lesson about greed, or risk and reward. It just happens, and I may or may not be able to take advantage of it.

Now, if I set up a system of rewards and punishments depending upon someone's behavior, then there is definitely purpose there. I may be training my child to behave, or not steal, or to do his homework. Then there's a definite purpose to things.

Unless there's a human intent behind an action, I don't see anything that can be described as a "purpose".

I have often wondered the same thing myself. It is a thing we cannot know - there is not and should not be certainty in life. If someone tells you that they have all the answers then do not trust them. The conclusion that I came to is that we should live each day and take every action as if it has a real and genuine purpose. I do not believe that our lives are random and futile, but even if they are, then it is better to act as if everything matters. Because it does: to you and everyone around you.
