I assume you're talking about the Mayan calendar? Some people do, yeah.
Personally I think they just got tired of scratching the markings into stone. They had to stop at some point. It doesn't matter what date they stopped at, some people would think whatever day would be doomsday.
They'll need to find another apocalypse theory to grab onto come 2013 :]
