The original Superman wouldn't have ducked.
You must mean those unconvincing girlie versions on the television.
The original Superman would think nothing of flying through the heart of the sun as part of a day's work.
I thought Christopher Reeve's version was really weedy, and falling for a girl too! How utterly wet!
That squirt with the potato face in the lousy television version is even worse.

I've explained this before, everybody please pay attention this time...!
Superman was NOT ducking from the gun thrown at him. He was tensing his muscles, PREPARING TO LEAP after the bad guy who was turning to flee as he threw the gun! It only LOOKS like Superman was ducking. That the gun happened to go over his head was only coincidental. It wouldn't have hurt him if it hit him in the face.
If you want a real treat, go to 'Superman through the ages'; they have loads of the best classic Superman stories on line for FREE, some of them go way back to 1939! This is the only way a lot of fans will ever be able to read those stories which would cost $$$$ today.

The ducking is a natural reaction. Since the current version of Superman did not get his powers untill he was old he may have been hurt by something thrown at his head before he got his powers.

Bullets don't penetrate his invulnerability shield. But a revolver is an object. Which seems to cause him minimal harm.

one unexplainable idea due to the writer's/artist's intention of minimizing Superman's capability and power. they dont want him to be too powerful and all. he's got all these super powers and all, hes like a god. i dont even know why... =)

his power are good against small object, not large( simple minded idea, but in future they changed the idea)
