I have heard you can burn them out but open fires are not permitted. Would a hammer drill be able to drill into granite? I was thinking if you could drill holes in them you could pour in water and hope the freezing action over the winter would do the trick. I know there is a product that expands in drilled holes and breaks up concrete but that wold be very expensive for the job I have to do. All suggestions are appreciated.

there is a tool for this ,just drill a series of hole across the rock
then put feathers and a wedge(go to a stone mason to buy some) the hit with a small sledge hammer(5 pound) until the rock just breaks apart.

drill holes in rock.look to see if there are changes of color or layers.buy or have a `drift `made,
a tapered steel rod that will fit part way into drilled hole.(more than 1 is better)dont try to break rock with continous hammering ,knock 2/3 in.hit each in turn, leave for a few seconds then repeat.

This is hard to believe but if you look closely at the boulders there is usually a seam on them that if you hit in the right spot with a sledge hammer and wedge they will break pretty easily. My father in-law showed me where to hit them and it worked!

I guess it depends on where you live, but in my part of the country huge boulders are prized for landscaping and quite expensive to buy. Any chance an excavator would remove the stone for you for the value of the rock?
