We are planners, and we already have two boys...Gabriel and Jonah. Most likely we'll have a third boy, and I like to have a name picked before so this is what we've decided so far, but I'd like opinions. Some reasons for this choice is that Ariel is a favorite of my husband. Since some people can't get over the fact that it has become popular for girls I thought that using Jeffrey (my husband's middle name) so that our son could go by AJ if he ever wanted to. We would still call him Ariel or Ari though. Lucas is the name I liked, and I didn't like Ariel Jeffrey alone. So anyway...I know there are going to be negative opinions, but I love feedback anyway. Please share...

Ariel has an awful lot of female connotations these days. Your son will certainly meet female Ariels in his lifetime, and that may make him uncomfortable, but Ariel IS traditionally a male name - the name of an archangel, for that matter.

I, for one, am sick of all these boys' names becoming "girl" names. (Ashley, Morgan, Taylor, Casey, Jordan, Reese, Riley, Addison - now they're even going after Kyle, Dylan, Blake, Ryan....its sad! Pretty soon we'll be meeting Georges, Henrys and Davids that are female!) I can understand parents not all wanting to give their little girls uber feminine names, but it really is unfortunate that so many traditional male names are now off-limits for boys because of the feminization of what were once traditional male names. Especially when so many masculine names can be feminized as it is...(Michael-Michaela, Harry-Harriet, etc)

I like that you were sensitive to the fact that your son may want to go by his initials if he feels his name is too feminine - and AJ is a very nice 'initial name' Ari is a fantastic nickname for a boy as well, definitely masculine (well, today its masculine - you never know when it, too, will be snatched up by the girls though...)

Ariel was actually a boy's name before it was used as a girls name. My daughter is Arielle. However, I ran into an old friend who's son was Ariel - named for Ariel Sharon. Although I have a daughter Arielle, I think it is fine for a boy - especially if you want to call him Ari. Also, it goes with your other boys names. Good Luck!

I really like Lucas! I have Lucan and Luca on my favorites' list because I love Italian names. Lucas is a little too common for my liking, but it's still an amazingly handsome name. Cas is a great nickname too. Lucas Alexander is very nice. So are Lucas Nathaniel, Lucas Sebastian, & Lucas Theodore. BQ -- I don't think Lucas and Juliet are too close at all! You mean because of the "oo" sound in the first syllable? I don't think that's too similar at all!

Ariel is the name of the young FEMALE mermaid character on Disney's The Little Mermaid. Have some compassion on your child...even if he goes by AJ some teacher at some point will use his "real" name and he will be tortured on the playground. Honestly, think about the effects this name will have on your child. Go with Lucas or something other than Ariel.

I didn't realize Ariel was a boy's name. How about Aristotle instead. That was the name of the shipping tycoon Onassis, though went by Ari. Unless you're extremely wealthy or a professor of logic and philosophy or Medievel English Literature at Harvard or Cambridge, people will think you're putting on airs and your son will have a lot to "prove." I think he would have a much better chance of survival with Aristotle and it might even seem "cool" to his peers.

Ariel is the name of The Little Mermaid - he may get teased about that. But Jeffrey Lucas is nice. :-)

Well, I do think Ariel is to close to a girls name. However, I love the name Luke for a boy. I have a nephew Luke Aiden.

But with your names, I like Jeffrey Lucas.

(p.s. I love the other names you have for your sons, very nice!)

I don't think Ariel is a very good name as your son grows up. Please don't be offended by what I'm saying. I think he will get picked on like the Johnny Cash song "A boy named Sue". I think of the Little Mermaid when I hear the name Ariel. I think Ari is nicer. Well, it is your choice but if my partner wanted to name our son Ariel I'd definitely veto that decision real fast! Good Luck anyway.

I like Ariel but only because I live in Argentina where Ariel is only a boy's name.
I'm Italian and I like the name Andrea for a boy (in Italy it is a boy's name), notwithstanding that, living as I do in Argentina where Andrea is a girl's name I'd never subject my boy to a childhood of being laughed at.
There are plenty of names you can choose from.
Lucas is great. I like that one. Stick to Jeffrey, to make your husband happy, and Lucas, to make yourself happy. Fair for both of you AND the child.
Good luck.
