Your question is a bit complete but I"ll give it a shot.

The system of classification by characteristics was started by Karl Linnaeus is the 1700's, a well known botanist.

He devised a system that started with the most general and broadest traits and then groups everything into 1 of 3 Kingdoms or groups .
(originally mineral, animal, plant). Then each category was sub-divided by slightly more specific traits, say, for the animal kingdom Chordates, and non chordate. The characteristics become more specific, mammal vs reptile,
and so on until the classifications depend on almost trivial traits, the distinction between humans of different "races for example Homo sapiens sapiens, and homo sapiens africanis.
Both can and do interbreed successfully with fertile offspring. There is no doubt they are the same genus and specie, the distinction is based on geography at a classifiction level lower and less important than species.

Some people prefer 'classification'; 'grouping' or 'ordering' also works. It's not clear, really, what you're looking for - perhaps a trifle more detail about what you would like to know would be helpful. Remember - you know what you're trying to say, but we don't. Spell it out for us.
