We now have bathrooms and running water and electricitiy.

Yeah... there's no manure on the porch. People bathe, brush their teeth, don't have sex in front of the kids, don't have a brood of 15 kids, but 8 of them died in the winter. No giant stove in the middle of a 12*12 hut. Clean water. Don't grow their crops for a greedy king, starving on account of the royal family.

Most people don't have the house keeping staff sleeping around the hearth in the great hall. We don't have a lord and lady sitting on the dias. And we don't have a minstrel to entertain us every evening. We also don't scatter rushes on the floor.

Well, most people these days probably don't keep goats and donkeys in the kitchen any more.
