..You cannot stand.

I can't stand :

You've Lost That Loving Feeling- The Righteous Brothers

(This song has evolved into a dumb drunken barroom singalong. You know. The kinds where all the guys think they're SO funny when singing it)

Sweet Caroline- Neil Diamond (similar to the above & just plain annoying)

Piano Man- Billy Joel (a classic transformed into an over-played wreck. Not to mention similar to the above 2)

more later...

Thing is- I think Piano Man is good, just that it's sadly been turned into this atrocity.

Thank you, Fonzie, for asking this question! The songs you mentioned should qualify as a best answer. Sweet Caroline has been embraced by drunken Red Sox Nation as their official rally cry. WTF is the connection there? Makes no sense and is a very annoying song. Some of my picks.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird - the whole joke with the lighters and the encore stopped being funny some 25 years ago.

Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven - the most overrated song of all time.

Disturbed - The Sickness - they play it all the time so someone must like it, but WHY?

Aretha Franklin - Respect - weddings, bars, parties, and karaoke, there is no escaping this song.

Sookie - great call on American Pie, I never understood the appeal of that song either.

Prof - In this context, Gloria Gaynor and Aretha are in a virtual deadlock for most overplayed obnoxious party anthem. I agree with you in that there has to be a curse factor associated with both songs.

Dani G - The White Sox had their own joke of song with Don't Stop Believing from Journey. I would gladly trade Steve Perry straight up for The Dropkick Murphys.

During the explosion of music in the 80s, there were some bands and singers that everyone liked, it seemed, except for me. I simply couldn't be drawn to any music from: John Cougar Meloncamp Bryan Adams Bon Jovi Guns n Roses Dire Straits Bruce Springstien Whitney Houston I am not familiar with much of today's music, but I certainly understand what you're saying about not clicking with a song that everyone else seems to love.

I hate all versions of the song "Last Kiss" ("Where, oh where could my baby be/ The lord took her away from me...). I also can't stand "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks, and just about any song about someone who died.

Comments on yours and other answers:
"Piano Man" and "Hotel California" are in my bottom 5; I never need to hear either of those songs ever again for the rest of my life.

I hate "American Pie" as well, but what I can't stand about it most of all, is when it's the anniversary of the deaths of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and The Big Bopper, all the radio stations play "American Pie" instead of the music by the people whose music we're supposed to be celebrating!

You've got some great picks, and I'm sure I could about 6300 more songs to the list, but I'm going to just pick one and it's a little more "niche-y" than most.

Two Step by Dave Matthews Band.

Everyone LOVES this song. LOVES IT. They cheer for it through an entire concert. (Which is ANNOYING!)

Personally, I think they have WAY better songs. (Although when this is the encore song - it gives me a jump start on the exit traffic - because I WILL leave!)

Speaking of concerts and annoying things people yell - I hate "Free Bird" too.

I'm going to go ahead and throw another vote towards Hotel California. I'll admit that there are portions of the solo section at the end that I enjoy, the riff is pretty cool, but it's just overplayed, overloved and honestly not that good.

I imagine I'm going to get killed for this, but I HATE the Joker by Steve Miller. It's just obnoxious and maybe I'm just bitter but I just get this mental picture of 90s faux hippies acting like douche-bags rocking out to it. Maybe if I'd only heard it once or twice it wouldn't be so bad, but it just grates on me. This song is definitely my number 1 choice.

probably more to come if the question is still around later.

thanks lovenrckts for bringing up bad context. I doubt I'm alone in my complete hatred of I Will Survive, but I always laugh at the fact that you will hear this song at most weddings. Maybe it is the omen that has made the divorce rate so high as brand new brides, still in the white dress are reminding themselves that they're strong enough to pull through.
I also would like to give kudos to Sookie for the call on American Pie. I'll give it it's catch factor, but it's just not very good.

I'm not gonna state the obvious ones.. you know which ones

U2- Pride (In the Name of Love) I just don't get why it's so great.. it's repetative and it just doesn't stand out to me.

Yes- Owner of a Lonely Heart, it really doesn't come close to other Yes stuff, but it somehow is the most famous Yes song. And normally something like this wouldn't bother me, but the fact that it's Yes....

Van Halen- Hot For Teacher, maybe it's just cause I don't like David Lee Roth but the song just annoys me

The Police- Message in a Bottle, it all sounds too repetative for me

REM- Everybody Hurts, it's just overly sappy and chessy for my taste

I TOTALLY agree with Piano Man - I can't stand it!

Mine is Don McLean's "American Pie". That song puts me to sleep, and not in a good way.

Edit: and Prof & lovnrckets are right on the money with "Hotel California" & "Stairway to Heaven". I don't get it with either of those songs, and I immediately turn the station when they come on.

Sweet Caroline - THANK GOD someone mentioned this one.........yes, I absolutely hate the rally song of the Red Sox......especially the absolutely sh*tfaced version..........LnR - try dealing with it every April to October, everywhere you go.......sometimes it sucks to be a Bostonian

continuing on the Red Sox theme........ I'm Shipping Up To Boston.......argh.......and Tessie both done by the Dropkick Murphys. Okay, I get it, they love Boston and Boston loves them, but its bad enough that not only they are the 'official' band of the Boston Bruins, but a couple of years ago they became the official one of the Red Sox too.

Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me............... definitely prone to the drunken rendition.....so tired of hearing it, especially in bars.....there's always that one girl who jumps up does a little booty shake and screams WOOHOO! when its comes on then butchers it with slurred words.......can I please enjoy a drink without hearing it?

The Doors - Peace Frog.........song just annoys me....everyone seems to love it......so tired of hearing it
