Electric current is an effective way to heat metal in wire form to extremely high temperature. Note the light bulb. The tungsten (metal) filament is about 3500 degrees C. You need an inert atmosphere for that kind of temperature.

Hold the metal above a burnsen burner. Since metals are highly conductive, it will heat up soon enough to a high temperature.
