desktop> right click> display properties> screen saver tab> monitor power button> power schemes> For a home computer, which setting is best? Also, does this setting have anything to do with my monitor screen going black (then I can turn it off, then on again and it comes on for a few seconds- after doing this about 20 times, it finally stays on) ?? (my screen saver is not on)

Yes.

This is the settings that control the power management for your computer.

You can save about 50 watts of power by putting the monitor into sleep mode.

You can save about 10 watts of power by stopping the hard drives. It is debatable if this increases their life or not.

You can save 100 to 200+ watts of power by putting the computer into suspend

And an additional 20 or so watts by putting it into standby.

For the monitor and the hard drive moving the mouse or pressing a key will bring them out of power management. The monitor should take a second or two to come back. The hard drives may take 4 or 5 seconds to spin up to speed.

Moving the mouse or pressing a key should bring the system out of suspend. It may take 10+ seconds to recover, it will depend on your system.

To get a system out of standby you have to press the power button and it will probably take 20 to 30 seconds to recover.

How you set these is up to you, and how you use the computer.

Keep in mind that all that power ends up as heat, and has to go somewhere. So in summer your AC is expending extra power to get rid of that extra heat that your computer may not need to be producing.

well lol

in power schemes i have selected NEVER all around, coz i don't like seing a black monitor after 10 minutes of idle time.
but if u really wanna save on your electricity bill, i recommend setting turn off monitor to 30 minutes and hdd to 2 hours or more, so that the computer doesn't shut down completely all at once. as i said, i have them on NEVER, and my electricity bill is not too high, even tho i keep the computer on 24/7. it's like having 5 light bulbs 100W each on all day long. painless imo.

and yes, reactivating the screen should be as painless as moving the mouse or pressing a key - don't use the power switch on the monitor. :)

hi,
best config is allways bind 2 your needs.
for me i set everything 2 on, cuz most of the time i m near to the pc when its on or i shut down the monitor by its power-switch.

yes, it could have something 2 do with your screen going black - there is an option where the pc shuts down the screen after 20 min (it should be the standard-value). but normaly u dont have to turn it off an on, just hit a key or move the mouse, that should reactivate your screen.

hope this helps.
