the statement is "Conrad's repeated use of the word hollow throughout Heart of Darkness clearly illustrates his condescending attitude toward European imperialism". Does this mean he dislikes imperialism or approves of it? Help!

I would say he dislikes imperialism because the statement says "Darkness...condescending attitude toward European imperialism" the darkness is saying the dislike of imperialism. It says, the darkness is his attitude, basically. So he disapproves

Condescending means he is patronising and distainful towards it, not neccesarily a dislike (although he probably does dislike it) but that he sort of looks down on it.
Hope this helps:)

seeing the period over which Conrad wrote, it is evident he disapproves of imperialism.

BASED ON THE WORD CONDESENDING, HE DOES NOT APPROVE OF IMPERIALISM

I HAVE FORGOTTEN MUCH OF THE BOOK
BUT IF BASED SOLELY ON THE SENTENCE, HE DOESNT LIKE IT
