To the North is Fairbanks and colder weather. Heating your home will be more expensive there than the Anchorage area. Something has to be the reason Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska, and I say this could be it.

To the South is Valdez, Haines and Juneau. These towns are isolated from the rest by enough distance to cause transportation problems in the Winter. Juneau, you must travel by air or water to get to. Haines, you must travel by water or through Canada to get to. Valdez is so small, there are no large stores to shop at, hence high prices.

If you wish to do a subsistance type living, live off the land as many Indians do, you could live very cheap. Many of us who grew up in the lower 48 would not wish to live that way, it's a rather harsh life.

My personal choice would be Wasilla. WalMarts going to have a Super Center soon.
