Actually your best bet is just see if banks have any rolls of half dollars and buy what you can if they have any. You will do much better than if the coins come from the federal Reserve to the bank. You need to find rolls people bring in. Never take the 1/2 s back to the same bank. Use on to unload the ones you don't want. Go to branch banks for they are usually glad to get rid of them. You usually find goodies at small banks in the surrounding area near you have a chance at walkers and Franklin's. I found a branch bank in a rural area that was in the middle of nowhere and just for fun asked if they had any half dollars they said yes with a smile, I got 10 rolls and about 2/3's were Franklin's and Walkers. the coins are out there just look for them. I pick up cents people throw away and found a 1944 D over S cent in a store parking lot, some one threw away the wrong cent. Good luck on your endeavor.

Banks can only order them by the box. However, they can break open the box upon arrival and give you just the amount you want. They can hold onto the rest until you want to take it.

You might also want to ask if they have any loose halves or rolled halves already at the bank. Sometimes older people will cash in rolls of coin that they have been saving up forever and you can find a lot of good stuff.

I would think with half dollars that you wouldn't be likely to run into a completely new box. It's actually difficult to find halves after I think 2003.

Just a tip. When you are finished searching your coins return them to a different bank/credit union. That way when you go to get more you don't end up searching the same coins.
