Rugby came from Soccer so they probably changed the ball shape to distance themselves from it.

The first rugby balls were made from pig bladders so maybe pig bladders are shaped like rugby balls?

So the forwards can catch it properly..... Kidding, it has something to do with aero-dynamics .... If you kick a soccer ball it will always curve with the breeze, if you kick a rugby ball it goes through the wind, But they still made the ball that shape so prop can hold it on his belly..... Lmao

They started with a regular football (soccer ball) but a prop sat on one once and it stuck.
