Hi, I'm 38 and I've been on Yasmin BCP for about 18 months and have fallen pregnant. I'm wondering how this has happened. I do remember about 6 weeks ago feeling sick and upset in the stomach so could that have affected the pill and stopped it from working properly? Has anyone else fallen pregnant while on the pill? Is the pill really 100% effective to prevent pregnancy??

like all forms of birth control apart from completely refraining from intercourse the pill is not 100 percent effective. Yes, the problem with the pill is you need to remember to take it the same time each day and to double your protection if you have any incidents of stomach upset resulting in vomiting.

However in my case I am really glad of the result as he is 15 now tall blond blue eyed and really cute like me.

Good luck!

Birth control pills are not 100% effective... because the dosage needed by each woman is different.

Birth control works by artifically introducing hormones that makes your body THINK it is already pregnant, and there for prevents you from ovulating. The thing is that the amount of hormon needed to suppress ovulation is different for each woman.

Back when birth control pills were introduced, the hormone levels were very high to ensure the prevention of ovulation. But the medical community quickly learned of the negative concequences of high dosage hormones.

So new pills were introduced where the hormone levels were drastically reduced to the point where it's just enough to prevent ovulation... IN MOST WOMEN. But there is a small percentage of women where the hormon levels in the pill will not be enough to reliably prevent pregnancy.

The problem is that if they increase the dosage for everyone, they would start to endanger those that are more sensitive to the hormones. So the only choises are keep the dosage low and have a small failure rate, increase the dosage and have more complications, or test each woman to determine her required dosage.

Well nobody wants to pay for the extra testing because it would only do any good for a small number of people. They don't want to increase the dosage and risk medical lawsuits. So the best answer is to keep the levels low to avoid medical lawsuits and stick the 99% effective label on it.

I haven't heard of any cases on yasmin, but it happens with all birth control. Nothing is 100% short of having a hysterectomy, having your tubes tied, or abstinence. If you took it properly, at the same time EVERY day, it should have been roughly 99% effective. Sorry or congrats? Not sure! Being 'sick' wouldn't effect it, unless you threw up the pill that day.

no, the pill is not 100% effective, no birth control is. and no, a stomach ache will not stop your birth control's effectiveness. birth control pills work by forming a chemical barrier between the sperm and your cervix (that barrier only lasts for 24 hours) and they prevent ovulation BUT if you don't take the pill at the same time every day it increases the likelihood of conceiving.

I got pregnant on Ortho Trycyclin Lo. Most say you are still protected from pregnancy even if you take antibiotics. That's the only reason I can come up with, I was on antibiotics for a bug bite and found out I was pregnant.... also, there is a 1% chance and nothing is 100% effective except abstinence!

I got pregnant while on Tri-cyclen, even though I was taking them on time. The pill is about 99% effective, but medications and even alcohol can reduce the effectiveness of the pill. And if when you were sick, you vomited within a few hours of taking one of your pills then it's like you didnt take that one at all.

If I fell pregnant while on birth control I would look at it as fate....everything happens for a reason.
When I was using bc pills my doctor told me that antibiotics can affect the pill so use condoms if i'm taking them.
Also sick or diarrea can affect the effectivness of the pill because it doesn't stay in your system long enough to release the correct amount of hormones you need for it to work.
Also please remember no bc is 100%
