"Stand by Me" is the title of a song performed by Ben E. King and written by Ben E. King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The song is based on a 1955 Gospel song of the same name by The Staples Singers. Leiber and Stoller gave it a more contemporary sound. Since its release, there have been many cover versions of the song, though none have achieved the fame of the original.

Ben E King recorded the original in 1960, shortly after leaving The Drifters. It was originally an old Gospel song that King re-wrote, and it featured in the 1986 movie of the same name starring River Phoenix. When it was first released in 1960, it charted no 4 in the US and no 27 in the UK, but when it was re-released to coincide with the film, it hit no 9 in the US and no 1 in the UK. In 1987 it was also used in commercials in the UK for Levi's jeans.
