And other variants of the same benefits, that allow people to stay unemployed indefinitely. If we weren't at the point where we have to import foreign labour I wouldn't care, but there a several million Brits on their arses for no good reason. My twin brother in laws are in their mid thirties and have never worked, they just parasite of the state, my hard earned tax money.

Should we limit it to something like one year in ten when we have good employment rates? A lifetime maximum? I could walk into a crappy low paid job tomrrow and support myself. Why should anyone get away with it when we are having to import labour?

Some of you didn't read the question. I said 'and other benefits of the same kind'. I know people who've never worked.

In no way am I suggesting that the disabled and elderly should be left to starve. I am disabled enough to claim benefits.

I live in a lower working/underclass area. You wouldn't believe how many people I know socially here are ripping off the system. I don't think most middle class people come into contact with a lot of long term 'unemployed'. Most of the ones I know work on the side.

Yes, but only on a local basis. If the number of available jobs within a community is greater than the number of fit and healthy people capable of doing them, there is no need to pay out unemployment benefits.

Having read some similar Q & A's on here, I think some of the regulars on here would like to go back to the days of the workhouse! People living on benefits are being all tarred with the same brush, and no thought is given to circumstances. Of course there are some who won't work and they abuse the system (they are the ones who cause tax payers to be angry and bitter) but there are also those who cannot work, for whatever reason, and they are also treated as scroungers -that is not fair! And what about those who have worked all their lives, paying tax and suddenly finding themselves redundant or disabled? They have earned their right to benefits.

We need to be very careful not to judge others, just because they don't work, how do you know that they are not caring for an elderly or disabled relative, or doing some kind of voluntary work for charity? If they are doing some kind of good work while claiming benefits (with DWP knowledge of course) they should be allowed to do that.

People on JSA and on disability benefits already have certain hoops to jump through in order to get their benefits, they have limits and conditions that are applied to them. Suggesting that more pressure be put on ALL claimants regardless to get into work won't make a difference to the truly workshy, but will send others over the edge.

Two points on getting the crappy job to support yourself...thats fine supporting yourself, but do you have a family to support? And, if you have a crappy low paid job, where do you think top up benefits such as family tax credits come from? Who pays for those? Yep, the taxpayer.

That is the reason people don t have jobs as companys are getting in cheap labour from abroad. With your idea what happens if someone claimed jsa went to work for 3 years solid company goes bust he has a wife and kids to support bills to pay and can t find a job should he and his family be turfed on the street.
Your hard earned taxes would not go down anyway if your plan worked they would tax you on something else. Some people do abuse the system most don t. It is great you can walk in to a crappy job but not all people have that luxuary give your self a pat on the back love well done

Good question.

I don't think we should limit the time - I believe those that want to work will, those that don't won't. We need to get those on long-term benefit back out to work - this can be done simply by indicating the jobs that need filling and getting them to do it....or lose every benefit going!

I believe benefits should be cut - this also includes Child benefit. We need a benefit system that will help and support - not encourage to multiple but encourage others to take responsibility for their actions. Having a child is not a right, it is a gift - sadly many see having a child as productivity and they expect to be paid for it!

The whole benefit system needs changing drastically.

Why not make the ones that don't wanna work, go and clear all the rubbish from the streets, and hedges, at least they are doing something for the money they get from all us tax payers, if thier benefits were cut i'm sure most of them would then find a job, and have harder tests for the ones claiming dissability, cos i know a few and they are in better health than me, and i work over 40 hours a week, this does so wind me up, but most of these layabouts know how to work the system, and normally get more in benefits than i get for working a whole week...........

This question, if viewed in isolation from the whole question of the way this whole rotten system works, would have a simple straight forward answer like "yeah stop their money and force them to work."

Unfortunately, it's not that simple..........................

There is enough technology and labour to produce food, to provide free good quality housing, to provide high quality healthcare, to develop the underdeveloped world to effectively eradicate poverty and starvation throughout the world......

As it is the wealth of the world is controlled by huge conglomerates who's desire to perpetuate and protect the profit system is such that they are prepared to do so "By Any Means Necessary." EG - By Dividing Race against Race, Religion Against Religion, Employed Against Unemployed, Able Against Disabled etc...

Mass Migration and the "opening up of borders" is about bringing in Cheap Labour to increase profitability for the fat cats. That in turn forces the small businesses to follow suit or to go to the wall.

What we need is Workers Unity to ensure that Workers from All Over the World are not exploited more than UK Workers through Poor Pay, Poor Working Conditions, Poor Housing etc.

That way there would be no benefit in bringing in workers from cheap labour economies.

The problem is that that could and has led to jobs being exported wholesale to cheap labour economies.

While this system continues there will be a constant battle between the Classes, there will be Mass Poverty and Ultra Richness.

Workers and the Impoverished of the world now need an alternative Party to fight for a System Change to allow for the needs of the worlds' people to be met with all the worlds people playing their part either in their local community or farther afield to build a better world and to challenge the Environmental questions that could end the world.

My answer may seem way off beam and it would take me forever to answer more broadly but let me know what you think of my initial thoughts......

I tottally agree, but there are worse out there than those getting "jsa", a "friend" of mine is on "disability" due to depression, that's not an issue with me, I was on it for the same thing, what p'sss me off is that he then goes out to work!!!!! He works for a mate who's self employed & gets paid more than I do!!
I pulled myself up & got myself a job & often work 60+ hrs a week to suppport myself & have all the things I have, excpt I haven't been on holiday in i don't know how long, I live in a rented flat & pay bills & council tax & have lots of friends & family to buy Xmas pressies for., He's been on 3 this yr, to Thailand, 2x turkey & he's going away again for half term to butlins Blackpool!!

No matter what you do it seems somehow people manage to abuse the system never work and just live off benifits and those who are homeless and have acutally just hit a difficult situation after being a hard worker all their life end up caught short with nothing...it makes you think that infact the entire system needs to be changed it simply isn't working.

I don't think anyone should be allowed to just live off benifits and not get a job unless they have serious medical problems or disabilities.

Although I would love to say yes I wish it was as simple as that because while there are many employers who will not pay a decent wage then many mostly those with families to support just cannot afford to come off benefits.

Winston Churchill once said "that an employer who does not pay a decent wage should not be an employer"

And just in case you are wondering I nor my husband have never claimed unemployment benefit we brought up our family without benefits however this does not mean I can't emphasise with those who are stuck in the benefit trap.

nope, some people cannot genuinely get a job, you just basing your question on the young uns of today.

take my dad for example, hes got a masters degree from some posh uni in london. was one of the first to bring computers into local businesses, help setup and implement the first computers at leicester tigers rugby club to keep track of all the season ticket holders / members, successfully ran his own computer and business consultancy firm for a long time, taught business and computers at loughborough university and when the recession hit in the late 80's, his business dried up, lost his 4 bed house with double garage, divorced and hasnt been able to find work since.

hes 57 now, gets turned away from all jobs because of his age and has done for the last 10 years or so, suffers from bad asthma and he cant walk for ooh no more than a 100 yards without feeling breathless so some menial manual labour work is out of the question. all jobs he goes for are flled by some snotty kid with no experience but they can pay em less. he doesnt want to earn loads, just enough to get by.

so tell me, does he deserve to have his job seekers stopped along with all his other benefits?
