its tricky because there is a central valley and central coast piece to california. im not really sure how either define themselves as being "northern" or "southern". i would agree that the monterey area is probably the first major coastal city that would definitely fall into the norcal territory. centrally, i would say fresno. the stretch between there and bakersfield is really considered more central than anything else.

Wow, you opened up a can o' worms there! Many would put the northern boundary of SoCal at Ventura and LA County Line. Kern would be Central, as well as Santa Barbara County. But if you're strictly North/South (like the Sureños and Norteños), then Kern and Santa Barbara County are the northernmost points.
