Why does worthless mean the opposite of priceless?

Because it does.

"Worthless" means devoid of value.

"Priceless" indicates something so worthy it can't be assigned an adequate price.

PRICELESS is worth around , $1, $5, or $100, ! you dont know what price it is !!! It has no price..and will be priceless


And worthless is worth zero, negative 5, negative 10, until its more worthless and worthless

Priceless actually means to take it out of the category of things that can be sold. It indicates a category error.

Worthless is in the category of things to be sold; just that no one wants it.

It depends on how it semantically used: as an adverb or adjective! Examples: worthless-beyond worth , priceless-without price.

A lot of art is completely worthless. It won't house you, clothe you, or feed you. Yet, it can still be priceless.

is not the same as:
what is the price of something?

though I agree: language is sometimes confusing and contradictory: just look in the mirror and say any word over and over til it becomes unhindged from its meaning
