I've budgeted myself £150 (strictly no more) to spend on a hi-fi or whatever, ideally one with a usb docking point. Should I go for a half decnt one from Currys or whatever, a traditional midi or mini hi-fi, or get a set from Richer Sounds with an amp and no cables (think it would have to be Bush or one of the cheaper ranges).

What's the difference between the two and what should I do?

Save up some more money..then go to richer sounds.try to get the best separates you can and then save a little more and get the best speakers you can afford. Doing it this way will mean you will have a quality system that will last for years.
Buying a cheap midi or mini hi-fi is a false economy..they distort when you whack up the volume and you'll be dissappointed if you have a party because it wont be loud enough.

I saved up and got a TEAC system and put BOSE accoustimass speakers with it, cost...about £1500.00 but man, when those baby's are turned to eleven your ears start bleeding and the police are knocking on your door in minutes.
It's always good if the residents of neighbouring towns can sing along to your fantastic choice of music....

Sorry to disappoint you, but you won't get anything even vaguely half-decent for £150 (my speaker cables cost more than £150...).

Save up around £400-£500 and take a look at the offers from Richer Sounds. You'll be happy that you did!

Oh, and if you really want to enjoy your music, don't ever buy Bose - they cost a fortune, but are poorly made and sound lousy.

i second tripod's view on cheap hifi!
with a low budget, i'd go for second hand good quality seperates. if you don't mind taking up a little more space, and of course you'd have to forgo the usb port, but sound quality would be my priority!
i'd look at low end good makes like jvc, sony, pioneer, panasonic - it would be easy to find rewiews and tips.
good luck!
