You don't need a tach to drive a car with a manual transmission. You don't have to rev it really high to shift. Just take off until it feels like the car isn't pulling anymore and then shift.

Okay, this is going to take a little bit of time, but without spending any money, it's going to be your best
(possibly ONLY) solution. Now depending on the vehicle, and the type of use, you're going to want to shift around 3,000 rpm. (for racing, 5,000-6,000, dependant of the motor) Now without a tachometer, the only way to learn is by sound, and then what speed each gear brings you to at which RPM. So, to FIRST learn RPM...
Go to a local autozone, and have them perform an alternator test. This reuires the vehicle to be running, and at a certain RPM (2,000 exactly) Now, using this machine, you can view the up to the second read-out of your RPM as you do it, thus letting you know what tune (sound) will indicate what RPM you are at. Learn it all the way from an idle, up to 5,000 rpm. Thank the employee for the "alternator test' and take 'er on the road again.
NOW bring the vehicle same 3,000 rpm sound (good average speed) in each gear. Notice what speed you are at in each gear while at the same sound of the motor. The first one may be around 10 mph, 2nd 30 mph, 3rd 45, and so on.
Use these speed indicators to help you remember where to shift, and you will never have an over-rev issue.
This, my friend, will be the way you will shift from now, until you are driving your automatic hovercar in 60 years.
(now the physics) RPM, or revolutions per-minut (commonly confused for rotations per minut) Is the measure of one piston going from one ignition spark, to the next. This take the travel of going up, down, up, and then down again, (intake, compression, ignition, and then exhaust strokes) The crankshaft will actuallt rotate at twice the speed that the rpms indicate, because it must allow the piston to travel twice for ONE ignition.
I know this will help, enjoy!

You do not need a tach to shift gears. I have one but do not use it. Just go by sound and feel. With a little practice you can do it. Its a piece of cake.

than I assume that you dont know how to drive a stick. You should shift when the vehicles acceleration starts to even out with the engine.Depending on car 10, 25, 55mph.
