This team just got tired towards the end and the lack of production from Jose Reyes didn't help. The guy makes this team go like Jimmy Rollins does the Phillies. It was a tough draw facing the red hot Washington Nationals and a scrappy Marlins team. Not to mention the series against the surging Phils.
We have to remember that in the beginning of the year we all said, Tom Glavine is their ace? Seriously, this was going to be a problem and it was masked by his strong start to the season but he came back down to earth. He's old, hes a finesse pitcher with a high ERA and WHIP; he is doomed to David Wells status if he doesn't hang 'em up soon. John Maine really lacked consistency all year long, he'd follow up strong starts with absolute horrible ones. But still, he got the club 15 wins, thats not shabby. Pedro Martinez was hurt all year and he did come back strong but it was a little too late. This is a completely different club with Pedro in tow for the long haul. El Duque was solid once again even though he didn't rack up the decisions, his club still managed to win most games he started. Pelfrey never really showed up.
The starting rotation was serviceable but really could have been better. Oliver Perez was a nice surprise given he was traded for X. Nady. As has been well documented, the bullpen was where most of the team's problem lie. The back of the bullpen is just too old. Why Aaron Heilman isn't a starter is beyond me. Another solid year for the middle relief man who racked up a decent amount of innings with a very good 3.03 ERA.
Its pretty obvious what they need to do, everyone is saying it.They need to strengthen the bullpen. This team is far too strong to be throwing Guillermo Mota out there with the game on the line. A healthy Delgado wouldn't hurt either.

My thoughts are that Minaya is not that smart. He is trying to use overpriced over the hill veterans to fix his club right away instead of doing things the right way through their system. The Yankess have been using this band-aid approach for years and it has not worked. All they have done is over paid a whoole bunch of guys and gotten no results. The Yankees finally figured out to go back to the basics and build up their farm system again and it is working with guys like Cano, Melky, Joba. Minaya brought in Glavine, Pedro, Delgado, Green, paid these guys a ton of money but these guys are all finished. Just plain stupid. He does'nt know though because it ain't hard to spend the owners money. The Mets need to go back to the basics here, stop spending ridiculous amounts of money and crippling your future. They have a few great young players in Wright and Reyes. Forget about the now and build for a little down the road. How would they look if they just listened to what I am saying and just kept Kazmir. If they had Kazmir they would be in the playoffs. One bad move trying to fix something instead of seeing a year or two down the road. Dump these old guys, bring in more speed and guys who play defense and role players. If yhey decide to spend money then spend it on a young pitcher only. Like a CC sabithia, Dontelle Willis, Johan Santana.

as a life long met fan I've witnessed some pretty bad baseball over the years and the meltdown they had in Sept has to rank right up there as the all time worse...they played lousy ,uninspired baseball compared to the phillies who played hard with a lot of heart and determination. The phillies proved to be the better team, they deserved to win the division...

they did not take the phillies seriously. when the braves were far behind, they thought they can coast their way to the NL east.
so much for the mets bandwagon early this season, no?
