I don't know of any way to volunteer, and I'm trying as hard as I can to help a friend get into this. Any suggestions?

And if this is in the wrong category, where should I put it? This is my best guess on where it goes.

Seriously? start with your high school English classes. Look at "Time" magazines, the way they use sentences and common English, not exactly the way we do in every day use, is it.
That's because it's proper English. Try it and compare it. Now, take all the English classes you can get, when you think you've had enough, then apply to Ame's college in Ame's Iowa, The Elite of Journalism, all the well known authors went there, I can't recall how many noted world renown journalists and writers came out of Ame's but, if your serious, start there.

If you have any local papers in your community see if you can help them out at all. Even if its just making coffee or whatever, any sort of free community publication is bound to need a helping hand.

Call a few Journalism tutors at colleges / Universities to get some leads and pointers.

Hey - even call journalists at the major papers / TV stations, just to get a bit of an idea of how they started out.

Hi!

If u have a school/college magazine make it a point to contribute.

If u dont, u can write on topical subjects for your local newspaper.

You could also contribute to your community/parish journal.
You may not get paid but you will definitely get exposure.

hope this helps

Cheers n chin up:)
