i have a emachines T3624 desktop computer (p-o-sh btw)
when it is running, it is extremely loud, i can hear it from another floor!. im pretty sure its the fan thats loud. Ive had this problem for the last 2 yrs. i sleep in the same room, and i want to let it run at night while its doing scans and defragmenting and large downloads and things like that, but i sleep in the same room, so i want to make it shutup. someone told me that i need to clean the fan, then it will stop making the sound, but i dont want to open it up because i have no technical capabilities and know nothing about computers. also i dont have time to buy compressed air to clean it with. is there a way to clean it without compressed air? could it be an issue with another computer part? HELP!

It sounds as though cleaning the fan is the only solution I may be proved wrong, but also I had a noisy tower that turned out I it was short on memory to cope with all the programs I had running, it used to creak and groan.

It's not about the fan's dust, it's the fan's bearing have problem. Actually opening the computer case will NOT do any harm and changing the FAN will be very easy. Only 5 Steps to go!
1. Open Up the case and remove/unscrew the fan.
2. Take the fan and go to a computer store and say you want a similar fan. (better quality will be more expansive)
3. Install the fan you bought and (make sure you connected the cable), close the case.
4. Switch On the PC and the sound will Be Gone!
5. Make sure the new fan is running now.

Sounds like your fan is too hot or not moving at all. But take a look at the following links. The first one has pictures:

"If you can hear a fan in standby mode, there is a good chance it's the power-supply fan not the CPU fan.
Open the case in standby mode. If the CPU fan has stopped, then it must be the power-supply. If it is still running and is easily accessible, stop the CPU fan for a moment with your finger (on the hub not the blades).
If it is the CPU fan that needs to be replaced, it would probably be best to get one fitted in a shop. It sounds like your current one is not installed correctly - probably drawing power directly from the power-supply instead of the motherboard. This would explain why it is always on."

You can use a good vacuum with a small nozzle to clean inside the unit. Usually when a fan makes that much noise, the bushings are bad and the fan probably is not running at full speed. Take it to a professional for thorough checkout and cleaning. In the long run you will probably prevent problems.

For most cases, fans are the culprit which is causing loud noises. The dirtier the fan is, the louder the noise will be because it is forcing itself to spin at the optimal speed to cool down your system (with lots of dirts/dusts covering it, it will spin even harder).
If you are so lazy as to get a compressed air to clean it up then you just have to bear with the loud noises every night. Nothing will ever get solved if you don't even want to work on it. Best of luck.

MAKE the time, if its as dirty as i suspect, it is probably over heating also, e-machine are well know for this, especially if they are not kept clean inside as that are so compact.
my guess is you are at a wal-mart,staples,rite-aid,wal-greens,sams club,cocso,K-mart,Target etc at least once during the week and they all sell canned air so buy a can.
unplug your PC take to a room that has wood, cement or tile etc floor just not carpet. take the side off and start blowing the dirt out, pay attention to fans on CPU and power supply(be sure and blow from front to back & inside and blow back out) ,blow off ribbon, video cards, area around HD, CD rom basically any where you can see dust,
If you must put hand in case, then place one arm on case, this will ground you and prevent static eletricity.
this should be done about ever 6 months or so.
if you don't soon this system will over heat and/or to much dust will just plain stop fans from moveing.

Just check on screws and your connections, with a philips screw driver. Check on the plugs, maybe some lossens in transpering to another place.
This is just a first aide to your problem but the ultimate solution is to better check with a pro. To trace the sound maybe its from your hard disk, which is not good for computer.
This is a sign your unit is given up. Same with your CD rom drive. Aside from checking your fans.
Careful you might be endangering yourself. Have an ASAP solution to your unit.

I am pretty sure the fan or fans are the culprit. I would take it to a reputable computer shop and have them check it out. There are many quiet fans on the market today they can replace them with.

You probably have an EIDE hard drive, SATA hard drives are much quieter--also a dirty fan makes noise, like the others said.
