Last month my roommate was packing to take off with her boyfriend to another city for the weekend, the day before rent was due. I asked if she was just going to leave me a check for rent and I'd pay it. Her reply, "Uh, no- I don't have the money." This infuriated me. A mutual friend was covering her shifts that weekend. I asked why she was going out of town if she didn't have money for rent. She just looked at me. I went into my room and shut the door- to calm down a bit.

20 minutes later she came into my room with a check for rent. I didn't cash for a week to be certain she had the money.

Wednesday, she asked me to go shopping. Before we left she checked her bank account and only had $52, so we didn,'t go. She's worked twice since then and tonight she hurt herself playing soccer, so she called in to work for tomorrow. Rent was due today. We get a penalty after the 5th- not to mention it looks terrible to pay it after the 1st.

How should I approach this?

BUMMER! I wouldn't put up with this kind of situation because they always get worse. Your roommate sounds more irresponsible than dishonest, but you don't want to have to cover all her debts I'll bet. I would recommend having a frank discussion - maybe help her balance her checkbook, help her figure out a budget, offer her some advice on how she can earn money to cover her debts. Many young people just haven't figured out the fact that not everyone wishes to be a parent to them. They need learn how to carry their own weight. If she was not very receptive to getting her act together I would give her a date to be out of the residence.

If you allow your friend to use you in this manner she will continue to, even worse she may leave you holding the bag and move out on you all together. Like you
said how could she go out of town with
no money? Is it possible that maybe
your friend is supporting a dead beat
b/f? It would`nt surprise me if she bank rolled the whole trip. Just an observation. You need to loose the roomate, and get a more responsible one that you can rely on.

Just be up front about it. She hasn't been giving you money for the rent or supplies. If you weren't there to cover for her she'd be out of an apartment.

Don't worry about her being "hurt" as it she's got somewhere to go (to her boyfriend's, a friend's, ect.). If the roles were reversed she'd probably have chucked *you* out by now. As it is now, it appears that she may be relying on "friendship" to emotionally blackmail you into feeling too guilty to move out or throw her out.

Be direct, but don't be nasty. If all else fails, take your name off the lease & move out.

I think you should have a serious sit down with her and tell her what you feel, and your concerns. Tell her she has either got to pay up or maybe she should find somewhere else to live. Then if she doesn't seem to be changing positively....give her a 30 day pay or quit...then a 3 day...then lock her out.

She's an inconsiderate loser. Find a new roommate and get her out ASAP. It depends if she's on the lease or not. If she is you're kind of screwed. If she isn't don't get angry just kick her out. If you have to put her stuff in storage for her and change the locks. It's only going to get worse. Don't worry about your friendship she isn't.

Ask her for her half of the rent, tell her that she still needs to come up with her half, she may have to ask her parents or boyfriend. Do not pay her half!

Tell her that you are looking out for your credit. If she can't afford the rent then it's time for her to move out, sorry, but you can't afford the rent alone.

Get another roommate. She is bad news. Be sure to fulfill all your contractualy obligations regarding your lease and you should be fine.
