Peter Brough the only ventriloquist who lips moved got a show on radio where it didn't matter a jot. Alter ego Archie Andrews made stars out of Max Bygraves and Dick Emery who obviously didn't mind talking to a lump of wood or Archie
for half an hour.
I liked a ramblings of Rambling Sid Rumpole (the late Kenneth Williams) in the middle of the program.
They don't make comical programmes like that any more, sadly. It is all about ratings and statistics.

Yes good old Archie, apparently when Peter Brough died he left Archie to the children of his second marriage, which caused a family rift. I understand this has been healed now and there are plans to bring Archie back in some way.Dick Barton and Snowy, Dan Dare, all those old programmes, I've only got to read the titles and the signature tunes immediately spring to mind.Letter from America with Alastair Cooke, was another very long running programme, it was worth listening to just to hear him say Goodnight.

Hah the nostalgia, the BBC put out many Cd's over the recent years I have a collection of Round the Horn, Navy Lark but what I would REALLY love is a collection of 'Journey into Space' I was glued to the radio, Light Program I think, at 6.45, Lemmie and Jet and Doc and Mitch, Who also remembers them. I have just put this up as a question

Me! I used to listen to it I think about Sunday lunchtime. I also remember Ray's a Laugh. ITMA (just) Much binding in the March. Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon with Richard and Barbara. Al Read, and several others. They would now be rather dated but I do long for that type of show with something for everyone

Yep, remember him well. With Peter Brough, and I believe Hatty Jaques as Monica? What about Jimmy Edwards in Whacko? And The Glums, Ron and Eth? And as Annie above says, how good do you have to be to be a ventriloquist on radio?!
