George Custer wasn't sent out West, his wife in fact hated the West. She loved the New England and, Washington society.
It was George, he wanted the fame and glory he thought he was cheated out of during the civil war, thinking he could reclaim himself be going out and settling all the problems with the American Indians and come back victorious, and, thereby claiming great glory that he was cheated out of. He was a glory hunter and made no lie about it. That was one reason for his long blond hair, the newspapers and ten cent books of the day used it as a "come on" for his figure.
