He wrote it while going through his divorce from his first wife.
Part of it refers to stories about them printed in tabloid newspapers at the time.
This is why there seems to be a bit of anger in it.

The fact that he wrote it during his divorce is nothing about the song. It is about him seeing another person watching someone drown, and doing nothing to help. Various ideas include Collins then inviting this person to a concert and singing "In The Air" to them, as if saying "You can't deny it, I saw you there. Why don't you come forward for F*** sake?" The for F*** sake is portrayed by the entry of the drums, now used in irritating cadbury's gorilla commercial. Mystery surrounding where Collins got the idea for "In the air" from could have been a product of his feelings at the time.

Incidentally, the drum fill was a sixth improvisation done by Collins and he didn't like it when he played it. But thanks to the gated reverb on his drums and a little persuasion from the producer, he decided finally that he liked it and kept it.

He said in an interview that he never really knew what the song was about. He was going through a divorce and and the words must have come from all the emotions, anger, sadness, depression, that he was feeling at that time in his life. The song took on a life of its own, becoming that of an "urban legend" with countless stories of what the lyrics really meant, when in actual fact, they didn't mean anything. That goes to show you some people are so gullible, they believe song lyrics at the drop of a hat. Not all song lyrics have a meaning. Do they have to??

There's an urban legend surrounding this song. Apparently, Phil Collins actually witnessed somebody drowning and did nothing to help. He denies it. Phil says the song was actually about the end of his first marriage.

i do not know what phil collins specifically thought about when writing this particular song. to me it represents a special certain feeling. i feel "in the air" is about a persons particular intuition. How you feel when you first fall in love. it could be about, how you feel when you know an answer you could not have known but do. it could be about a spiritual awakening . a person might feel all their special senses coming together for a few of those precious moments.that we might remember all the details about a special pivotal moment in our lives for all of time...it is a coming together of what magic a person can feel in that instance, that may change them forever...
