What do you think, Holliday was "safe" or not??

I am a Rockies fan...

I think it is VERY questionable. From one angle it looks like there wasn't a chance. From another it looks like he could have been.

However, I don't think the ump "threw" the game, or anything like that. I think either the ump saw something not on the cameras, or he made an honest mistake. The late call makes me wonder if he decided to take a closer look at the slide marks, or something like that.

I wish we hadn't have won on such a questionable call. However, that is all part of baseball. No instant replays, what the ump says goes. The occasional bad or questionable call is part of the game. My opinion is that the ump probably wasn't 100% sure himself, but made the call of what he thought happened.

The Ump was right but maybe not for the reasons he or others think. It was fielder's interference.

OK - even if Holliday missed the plate (which appears possible) then Barrett was wrong to block it since Barrett DID NOT have control of the ball. If you don't have the ball, you can't block a base!! That is fielder's interference and therefore the ump can grant the next base free (which would be home plate in this case).

My conclusion: the announcers/analysts ought to learn the rules then they could've cleared this up right away - you can't just stand in front of a base without the ball in hand... True, he ALMOST had the ball but almost doesn't cut it.

I think the ump paused because he had to make sure he was right - probably had to think a second before committing on the call. Once he realized the ball was never under control, either Holliday got the plate or there was interference, either way he was safe :)

He looked out to me and I'm a Rockies fan from day 1.

What's ridiculous is they could have held Holliday after the catch of the short fly to right. Only one out at that point. Hard contact wins the game from that point regardless of Hoffman or any other HOF bound pitcher.

The Pads were doomed when it went extra innings to begin with.

Neither.

Matt Holliday never touched the plate and Michael Barrett never tagged him.

I actually believe that he may have touched the plate. The camera angles provided on TV were insufficient. Maybe the umpire saw something that we all didn't.

Regardless, the Rockies were tied 8-8 with no outs. I believe they would have won the game anyway.

Out. That would have been the time for Bud Black to rush out to the home plate umpire and ask him to check with the third base umpire, who might have had a clearer view. The umpires might have conferred and gotten the right answer. Instead, he did nothing, Barrett did nothing afterwards, although he did a good job of protecting the plate and the Padres lost. Not that they did not deserve to lose. Not a great track record for Peavey and Hoffman in October.

Im watching Mike and Mike in the morning right now, they both said Holliday never touched the plate. That would of been the second out of the inning, so they could of gotten out of it. There was a runner on the bases, so he might of scored on a hit. We will never know.

no no no no NO .. lol a lot of ppl seem to think he was but obviously i guess they were all just rockies fans .. no he never touched the plate .. nor did he even slide right to home plate .. the ump was crap he dosn't even know how to make calls .. he said balls were strikes and strikes were balls .. and he hesitated when holliday came in and missed the bag .. right then and there he should of called him out ..

that was a tough game .. both teams did very well and it was a nail~bighter .. but me personally i wanted to see san diego win .. i think they'd be a better matchup for the phills

go Phills !!
J-Roll for MVP !

oh he was out for sure....great throw by giles, i did not expect there to be a play at all let alone such a close one. and barrett couldn't have blocked the plate any better, holliday better be thankful his hand wasn't really messed up

regarless, the way they were smashing balls off of hoffman i'd say if they called that out the rockies still would have won

He was out by far! Barrett blocked him from the plate. I didnt believe it at first but they continue to show the replay and you could see that he didn't touch home plate. But i think this is good for the Rockies. Its kinda nice to see new teams in the playoffs other than same one year after year.
