Youre supposed to wear leathers - to avoid the 'sunburn' of the arc on your arms- its a pure UV ray saturating your skin and you can get skin cancer from it. Same for gloves. If a vacuum bench could be used- its more benficial, to draw welding fumes away- since these too arent healthy to breathe in.
Now sparks are a different story, you just have to deal with them, wear older jeans. Believe me, i torched a pair of decent jeans before , never knew it till someone told me.

you will always have a constant sunburn unless you wear your leathers. As for the welding burns....those you can get used to. You'll just look like a tweeker if you dont wear your PPE. You know, Personal Protective Equipment? After welding upside down for a while, you won't feel the slag rolling down the neck of your shirt.....lol. but you should always wear PPE cuz there are alot of welders that are coming up with lung cancer and the ones that I know don't smoke cigarettes either.

UV rays from welding are as bad for your skin, if not worse, than the bright sunlight. Cover your skin up.

It doesn't happen. You either get thicker Safety Equipment or learn to accept the burns. You really don't want exposed skin due to the ultraviolet rays. I have been a certified pipe welder for over 30 years and have the small scars from burns all over me.

I just wear gloves to stop the radiation, plus it keeps all those damn sparks and molten metal off your hands
