Just say, this is what you are planning on doing / it is not up for debate! Thank them, if you want... for their opinion - but do NOT feel obligated to!!!

Also, sarcasm always works for me!

Thank them, telling them they are the first person to ever tell you about medication even being an option!

If that doesn't work... try something more conventional like - not having to give an explination - tell them, you were not asking for their approval, just stating the fact you don't want to use meds.... it really isn't any of their business anyway!

Good Luck - only you know what is right for you and your little one to be!

Pity their ignorance! Smile patronizingly at them and say something like "you might think it doesn't matter, but studies show it's much safer for the baby to have natural childbirth. Why a mother would want to endanger her baby's health or life to save herself some pain I can't imagine!" and laugh condescendingly. I had natural childbirth with both of mine, and I'd rather have a baby any day than root canal! Since you want to do this, I assume you know that even an epidural can diminish your ability to push, which could be critical. The baby's alertness, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, all are affected. Plus, this is such a rare experience, I wanted to really BE THERE for all of it! Women all over the world give birth unmedicated - why are Western women such weenies that they think it's so difficult? If you can afford it, I highly recommend a doula. Had one for my second child because my husband had to stay home with the first, and she was fabulous - much better than my husband! I know someone who's a licensed social worker but has her own doula business. They are GREAT. So in conclusion: never listen to the advice of ignorami.

When I tell people that I don't want meds because it's not that bad they look at me like I'm crazy. I tell them it's just one contraction at a time, and I can do one contraction at a time. If I tried to think about the whole thing as one collective pain it would be torture, but I see it in tiny increments.

For me the most pain relief comes from praying. I always ask God when the baby is coming and He always tells me the time within 5 minutes. I never bother going to the hospital until its close and at the hospital they usually think I'm under 4cm because of my composure. I'm always at least 6, but usually 8. I always tell my dr when the baby's coming ahead of time and I've not ever been wrong. My labors are all very different though. First was 4 hours, second 7.5 hours, third 24 hours, fourth 12 hours, and fifth 5 hours. I believe God is speaking to me and comforting me in my LD because I am relying on Him. If the labors were similar I could say it was coincidence, but that is not likely. They have all been extremely different.

God intended on natural childbirths thats why they didn't make pain med. back then. I had a natural delivery with my first baby and it was awsome you really get to experience motherhood during that time. I did have pain med with the second because my dr. would not break my water til morning and my contractions were in my vaginal area and not in my belly , I honestly felt better after delivery without the med and i healed faster. You tell anyone giving you a hard time that you are the mother of this child and you will choose to do it anyway you please, and if they have a problem with it then they just buzz off. Maybe they are jealous because they were to wimpy to birh natural, be proud of yourself and have confidence I know you can do it. Good Luck

Hi there,

Just tell them that like me you are allergic to these medications.

That because I enjoy breathing I can not have things like pethidine. I also enjoy walking so the swelling I get from Local Anaesthetics would leave me unable to should I try an epidural. Gas makes me sick.

So it's a hot shower and mind over matter during birth. It works for me. Good thing to as I have no other options.

It is your choice, not theirs. No one has the right to tell you how to live your life or have your child.

I applaud your decision to go without medications. For what ever reasons.

Have a look at these links. They may help you deal with the opinions of other people.

Best of luck for a safe arrival.

I only had gas with the birth of my first child and I am really proud of myself. It hurt like hell but at least I can remember most of it without the influence of other drugs.

Just tell them you have been a bad girl and deserve the pain, or you want to know your alive and the pain will let you know. I dont think I have ever come across this I have heard people being negative towards people using drugs during labour but not the other way.

Each to their own I say.

tell them there are people like me, who was going to have an epidural, looking forward to it and a vaginal birth. but once i got the epidural my blood pressure plummeted and so did the blood pressure of my perfectly healthy baby and i had to be rushed into an emergency csection. tell them that women have been giving birth without medication for thousands of years, hell cats do it without medication, and since its your decision that they shouldn't worry about it. i was criticized for wanting medication so people will always find something to pick on you about, especially during pregnancy when everyone thinks they are an expert. every woman is different, do what you need to do. but also keep in mind that childbirth is very painful and most women get an epidural without any problems like i had, so keep your options open if it gets to be too much! GL!

Usually no matter what you say they won't stop questioning why you are doing what you are doing, just simply say this is what you are comfortable with and what you want, and leave it at that, if they offer why their reasoning is better just nod your head and tell the you have done the research and this is what you feel is best for you.

People are negative? Wow I take my hat off to you if you refused drugs!!!!!! I almost died from the pain, I couldn't bear it and caved in to an epidural. Power to you!
