Once I've missed my plane before, so I would recommend stay around Narita area.
Mt. Narita is the one of the option.
Or there is a shopping mall w/ movie theaters near Narita Station.
Aeon Mall

If you are tired, there is a lounge where you can have a rest at a lounge in the airport.
Narita View Hotel, Narita Airport Washington Hotel, and some other hotels near Narita Airport offer rooms for day-use, so you can have a rest there too.

Narita is about an hour from Tokyo, so you would have a little bit of time. just make sure you;d be able to leave.. if you are in transit going from one country to another, you may have issues with immigration being able to leave the international terminal.

I actually did something similar once on a layover, but my experience was at Incheon Airport in South Korea. I took an airport limousine bus from the airport to Seoul, did some touring, and went back to the airport later in the day. In my instance I had about 13 hours between flights. I opted for the airport limousine because of the convenience factor, I don't speak Korean and was unfamiliar with "public transport" in Korea.
If you want to do something similar, I think 10 hours is enough time to do one, maybe two significant activities. An airport limousine bus from Narita to downtown Tokyo would cost 3100 yen (less than $30USD) one way.
If you want to stay at the airport, that's also a decent experience. Leave the "secure" area of the airport and venture into the mall area of the terminal, Narita airport has a lot to offer in the airport from food, souvenirs, electronics, etc.
Good luck whichever way you decide to approach it!

It costs about 3,000 Yen (approx 25USD) (1 way) to ride an express train (called N'EX trains operated by JR trains - the largest network train company of japan) from Tokyo Narita Airport to downtown central Tokyo Station. The entire trip takes approx only 50mins to get into the heart of tokyo.
The trains runs every 30mins during peak, and 1hr during non-peak.
There are lots to offer in tokyo for 10hours!
get downtown to ueno park (alight at Ueno Station) and take a short walk (if u're travelling in november) to take a look at the autumn trees in the park. It's one of the famous spots that always appear on TV.
You can go down to tokyo tower (using the subway, alight at Akanebashi station) to have a view of tokyo city.
You can also visit Asakusa, take a short walk around the area and visit the famous Asakusa Kannon Temple and the Nakamise Shopping arcade just infront of the temple. it is one the most famous temples and most visited temples. a touch of culture in 1 of the busiest cities in the world.
Briefly make a stop at Shinjuku, and get down to the cross junction and get a photo snapped of you standing in the midst of moving crowds. The junction is known to be 1 of the busiest junctions in the world.
If u still have time, go by Odaiba. (take JR train then transfer to Yurikamome line) get a glimpse of the famous rainbow bridge that always appears in japanese mellow dramas.
10 hours isnt a time for shopping.
So no point stopping by for souvenirs along the streets as u can always do it in the airport duty free.
Meals: Just hop into any small eateries downtown that offers ramen noodles to rice dishes.
If u want to have a taste of japanese yet in the american burgers for convenience (u can eat as u go), spot for MOS burger joints. they offer japanese style fillings (teriyaki chicken, unagi-bbq eel etc...) in the form of rice patties burgers and the normal american bread burgers.
Time needed would be approx: 10hrs-(50mins x 2 for N'EX) - 1hour (misc trains & subways)=7hours for all the sightseeing.
