Which nationality (ethnic group, cultural group) most of the chess world champions belong(ed) to?

I know that most of them were from the Soviet Union, however, I am not sure that the majority of them were Russian. You had at least one from the Baltic States (think it was Tal) and I believe Kasparov was at least part Armenian. (And I lost track after FIDE lost control over the world title and you had multiple claimants.)

Having said that, I would say that at least a large plurality were Russian (just not sure if it was a majority). The ones that I remember as Russian are Alekhine, Botvinnik, Petrosian, Smyslov, Spassky, and Karpov.
