I helped raise a child (now 25- who I am very close to)- who's mother had passed away suddenly when he was age 3. We talk about it. He is now a married man and a Father. He misses his Mom very much @ times, especially now that he is a Parent himself. When he was a young boy, I had to explain to him how his Mother passed away (both lungs collapsed). I feel that the psychological effects still hurt him today. It is difficult for him to have a healthy relationship, even with his Father, and he has problems communicating. His self-esteem has always been low. I always assured him that it was not his fault that his Mom died- Kids need validation this way. I am blessed that he will talk to me about things. Nobody will ever replace his biological Mother, and I've stressed this to him, since the day I became a part of his life. Hope this helped.

RE:
What are the psychological effects of boys growing up without mothers?
You always hear about boys being raised without their fathers, but what happens if a boy doesn't have a mother?

Emotional aspects of a child's character like compassion & respect for women is absolutely affected in my opinion. A mother provides pampering & sentiments which make a child realise the softness of life. Fathers can definetely try but a maternal instinct takes a high level of understanding for fathers to replace...
Cheers!

Well I'm not a psychologist however I do know that it is more important for a boy to have his father involoved in his life growning up than his mother though both most definetly. As for growing up without his mother may make him a little more appreciative of women though it depends on why his mother is abscent in his life -this "why" is very important in determining the answer to your question.

If it's a mother who was absent, they're more likely to be distrustful of women.
