Like if it is 3 years old, like it is not cutting edge hardware.
If there are like no beeps, that is a bad sign, but you don't say anything about post sounds.
If the harddisk died there would be a message on the screen, and like you don't say anything about messages.
Like simple isn't what you have. Probably a motherboard issue, or maybe the CPU died. Some power is getting through but it could be power related, but I doubt it.
Dust? dream on!

If the fan is working but there's no beeps or anything, there could be a number of different failures -
1) 3.3v or 5v power rail (5vsb and 12v are working, otherwise your fans would power up since the real on/off switch for your computer is on you motherboard). The fix would be to get a new, more powerful power supply (at least 350 watts, 400-500 is better).
2) Component failure on the motherboard (processor or any chips on the motherboard). The fix would be to get a new computer, or motherboard, processor, and RAM (and video card if you have a real video card, because you won't find an AGP slot on any modern motherboards or most newer computers).
Try the power supply first, because it's a cheap fix. If it doesn't fix it, or stuff on the computer is melted or charred, then get a new computer.

What brand do you have?. I definitely don't want that one. If you smelled something burning, you definitely have a major problem. I hope it's unplugged. It's possible that enough dust collected inside the computer, and the fan couldn't cool it off. I can give you three possibilities, mother board, hard drive, maybe power supply.

it could be an electronic part(s) of either your power supply or worst, your motherboard. have it checked by a qualified technician. the hard disk is unlikely to be the cause of your computer's death although that can happen. but don't entertain such thought for now because i for one believe that the hard disk is the most expensive part of a computer -- intangibly speaking of course.

power supply. If the processor fried...there would be physical smoke coming from the computer.

your hard drive is probably shot in which case you need a new one. many are only made to last 3 - 4 years. i had the same problem with mine.
