If he is guilty and he thinks he will be convicted of course it is good statesmanship. If he is not guilty but the press will hound him he might as well resign and run and hide.

It depends!
Some good statesmen do quit in protest if the government is ordering him or her to do something that is against his or her principles.
But, resignation in the face of bribery charges is a whole different matter.
It is of course a case by case situation in both examples.

Resignation is an act to do away with the impeachment trial to preempt a complete inquiry into the participation of officials accepting bribe money.

Greetings. resignation is much to be preferred to conviction of the crime. note for you or me resigning would not mean that we would not be charged with what we did. but with a politician resignation automatically stops all charges being brought. another example of the two different law governing us and them.

It guarantees their retirement package. If he ended up being charged of that crime, his retirement package would be forfeit.
