You can try using a seam ripper, it may leave some holes but you can by larger letters to cover up any uh-ohs. At least you will have the name spelled correctly. You can buy the letters at Michaels Craft Store, Joanne's Fabrics or AC Moore and just do it yourself at home. Good luck!

Is there any way you can get the maker to re-do it, or get your money back?

If not - when you say it's sewn on, do you mean the letters are kind from fabric and then attached to the shirt? If so, you can use a seam ripper to pick the threads out and rearrange or replace them with iron-on or applique letters from the fabric store.

If it's embroidered, you're stuck because it makes too many holes in the fabric.

Wahl Peanut Stitch Remover

I have typically used a Wahl peanut (yes you can use it to cut hair) to remove the embroidery stitches of garments. The tip is designed to cut the threads but I haven't cut fabric to this day. I can then reposition the item in my hoop, alignment is crucial, and restitched with new stabilizer on the back.

This has worked very well on virtually all fabrics, including dress shirts and duffel bags. I don't use it on t-shirts because the fabric is so unstable and thin.

Left over strings can then be removed with tweezers.

Did you buy the jersey on-line, from a store or from someone selling them on the street corner out of the trunk of his car? Did you look at it closely, if bought elsewhere than on line? If it was ordered on line, you should seek redress with the seller. Seems to me you should be wanting your money back, not worrying about removing and re-adding a name.

You can buy whats called a stitch eraser and cut the threads on the back only. It works really well, then turn it over and use your finger nail and scratch the stitches out
