And the answer is carbon paper. You seldom see it now, but years ago, that was the way document copies were made. The carbon paper was specially treated with carbon (which rubbed off on your fingers and smeared all over everything). A sheet of carbon paper would be inserted between two sheets of typing paper, then rolled into the typewriter (remember those?) and when you typed, you got a copy of the original, on the second sheet, under the carbon paper.
Copying machines were one of the most important advances in office procedures.

CARBON paper can be placed under regular paper, written or drawn on, and a blue/ black copy results.
