Most wood floors can be kept clean by first sweeping or vacuuming with a floor nozzle to remove most of the surface dust and dirt, then damp mopping with clear water (dip a sponge in clear water, squeezing it out so that the mop is barely damp, almost dry). Use very little water and rinse your mop thoroughly after each use since excess water can dissolve protective coatings, alter the color of the wood and raise the grain to roughen the surface.

If your floors are not dirty enough to need mopping every week, then you should not do it, as it will wear the floors faster, not to mention waste your time. Simply sweeping is often all they need.

If need to restore the shine to your wood floor after you get it clean, try damp mopping it with 1/2 cup vinegar and 2 tablespoons furniture polish in a gallon of warm water. Vinegar is also useful for removing any soap residue or build-up, but should not be necessary every week. Good luck! :)

Hi,

I'm not an expert on clean floors. Dust bunnies should be paying rent. But I did do some research and found some good advice on how to keep hardwood floors relatively clean.

Let's say you REALLY wanna clean. First, sweep the major dust bunnies with a soft broom. Then, use a Swiffer (or similar product) to capture the smaller dirt particles. Next, break out the mop or something similar that involves a cleaning liquid. Finally, if you're still not satisfied, do another Swiffer run.

That's for a deep cleaning. If that sounds like too much work consider hiring a cleaning person. They're worth it.

Vacuum and mop as you normally would and use an old fashion dust mop between your regular cleaning. It's quick, easy, and picks up more of the dust than a broom will pick up AND you can toss it in the washer when it gets too dirty to be effective.

Try putting down throw rugs. This works the best for me.
If they are machine washable, you can throw them in fast.
I'd put them in all the well used places.
