"What government can give you, government can take away."
- President Gerald Ford
Basically, while any centralized technique, be it ID cards, healthcare, or whatever, can have better economies and smoother function (and avoid duplication), if government controls it, they will string it to something unrelated and use that as an excuse to restrict it.
For example, say this new national ID card is good for health insurance tracking and coverage. And say that you are back due on some taxes or child support, or have some kind of lien against you. Government can, and likely will, freeze the benefits tied to your I.D. card until you resolve the other unrelated matters.
It's a control thing. A national I.D. card does noone any good; it just helps politicians gain that much more control over our lives.

It's a precursor to the embedded chip which will be ordered because of 'lost or stolen' cards. It sounds good as far as medical issues but it will be used for tracking those that may not want to go along with the 'program' and try to escape.
I find it remarkable that Bible prophesy has foreseen this incredible concept as well as the one world Govt, thousands of years ago.

An ID card is not a bad idea and it is not a bad idea to stop people and check it.
If you drive a car, you have and ID card--a driver's license and you can be asked to show it any time you are driving.
You can hear about all sorts of far-fetched notions, and there are people who still say the earth is flat. If you want to worry about excessive government control, direct your ire where it belongs--at the IRS.
