Because people are rotten, this is a growing problem and a lot of people who have answered here have no idea the dilemma it puts others in.
First a lot of people need to realize that especially in rural areas there are not a lot of shelters. Those that are there are usually full and won't accept any more animals. In some areas "Animal Control" is nonexistent.
To count chocula: while this sounds good and I have felt that way myself, where do you draw the line. I now have 17 indoor cats because of irresponsible people. I really can't take any more on but I can't leave them to fend for themselves out here.
To whoever suggested having them all fixed, do you have any idea of the cost involved. I had 7 cats done and it cost me just shy of $600.00 and that was with the 15% quantity discount.
To teresa m: A disservice! Yes it would be much better to just let them continue to run if you have no other options. That's a much better choice than doing the best you can for them.

Star for you.
I just adopted a second dog from the shelter. He's a big boy, and his owners apparently had four kids and various other animals. They gave him up after a year and a half because "they didn't have time" which I think is a crappy excuse. He is kind, sweet, gently enough to play with the ferrets, and didn't mind when our first dog growled at him when he first came in the house. He's not aggressive, and as sweet as can be. We've already taught him a few things, and we've only had him three days. He's sweet, intelligent, and everything you'd want or need in a dog.
He's also a Pit Bull, and knowing how rarely they get adopted makes me even more mad about his previous owners-- I've heard Pits have a 1 in 600 chance of being adopted...that's pretty sad people are that afraid of them because of bad media. I can't believe someone would rather dump a dog to his death than take a few days and find him a loving home. He was at the shelter less than four days until we adopted him, and is bone-thin...apparently his previous owners didn't have the time to feed him, either. Makes me wonder how people can be so heartless.
If I were you, I would contact a no-kill shelter in the area. They will take a dog and foster him or her until they are adopted. Also, you'll know that any healthy animal will not be euthanized. Or you can try putting up a post on CraigsList.com and do a home check to make sure the new owners will take care of the dog.
***Also please do NOT bring any animals to PETA-- they have killed over 14,000 in the past year, animals vets had certified healthy and ready to be adopted. PETA lied and said they'd find people to take the animals and killed them shortly after. Do a search for what the PETA leaders really believe, you'll be surprised.***
Finally-- thank you for caring about these animals. There should be more people in the world like you willing to care for these homeless pets. So few people care to help the animals that need it, and would rather buy a designer pet.

I agree with you 100%! It takes a cruel heart to abandon a pet to fend for themselves. It is sad and done way too often.
As for your situation, if it were me, I would first try to find a home for at least some of them. However, after that, I would take them to a pet adoption center. They are many of them. I do not know where you live but, call your local SPCA and they can help you with the information.
Locally, in my area, they actually show a dog or, cat on the noon news! They are all up for adoption and people can just call, go fill out the paperwork and they have a pet.
Oh my, I wish you and the doggies the best!

I feel for you and my advise would be to find out in your community if there's "Private Shelters" which are run in homes or farms with the supervision and funds of the city. That way they would be safe and they'll take care of all of their needs.
This is one thing that always gets me so upset... Don't allow any more animals under your care. Force them to take care of them or people will assumed that you're there for them when they "get bored" with their pets.
So many people get pets, mostly dogs and cats, as if they were toys... They play with them for a while and then... just forget about them or abandon them or just being so cruel to them! Don't they realize they are Living Things? That they Feel and Suffer too? And, that scientifically it was found out that Depression is a major cause among cats and dogs when suffering?
Please, people, think twice and also three times before getting a pet.

It's hard to lose a best friend who has spent so many years with you. I remember when I lost my first dog. I had him when I was a kid in Middle School to my first three years in College. So it was really hard for me and for the whole family. I do believe dogs go to heaven. My mom was still mourning the lost of our first dog and she heard this sniffing noise at the door. Our dog always did that when he wanted in or out of the house. She ignored it, thinking it was just her imagination and it continued and it got louder. Finally she could stand it no longer and went to the door and opened the door and then closed the door. The sound was gone. She was convinced that some how our dog had come back to say goodbye. So yes, I know dogs have souls/ spirts and they do go to heaven. Heaven isn't going to be lonely, animals are God's creations as well and when we go to heaven, they will also be there.

Look for a no-kill shelter or rescue groups that have foster homes for pets. In Palo Cedro, California we have Another Chance Animal Welfare League.
I am currently fostering one puppy and two kittens on top of the five dogs and one cat that I own. I've helped to place about 30 dogs and puppies in the last five years.
People always ask me if I'm sad when they leave, but the truth is I'm not. I mean of course I miss them but I am so happy that they have gone to their forever homes and their real families.
Our group screens the adopting "parents" very well, so we have only had one or two dogs that were returned to foster care. Usually this is due to the dog not getting along with a current pet.
Good luck and thanks for caring.

jjandedt, I don't have the answer as to why People abandon/ leave behind animals for others to take care of. It is a problem that happens all to often and I agree with you on that. I think you should call the Humane society about the situation with the dogs and cats finding their way to your house. good luck& God Bless.

I agree people should not get pets unless they are going to take care of them for life. And if they cannot do that, they should take them to a shelter instead of dumping them out on a road.
I understand you love animals, but you cannot take in any more. If any more arrive, give them to someone who will take care of them. If there is no one, call a shelter and have them take the animal in until it's adopted. It's not your fault that the animal was abandoned and you can only do so much for all the abandoned animals in the world. It sounds like you're doing a lot all ready.

well, if stray dogs and cats mysteriously flock to you, maybe you should take it as some sort of sign that it is your calling to take care of them. you better keep them just incase I am right.and yes, I agree that people don't take proper responsibility for animals they adopt, a person should always think long term about the situation. I love animals but I know I don't have the time right now to give the attention they need, so I am waiting until I finish school

You are doing yourself and the animals you are taking in a very big disfavor if you cannot properly care for them. Take them to an animal sanctuary where they can be cared for. If they are a specific kind of breed see if there is a place on line that will take them. There are places that take in German Shepard's and shelties, and Doberman and all kinds of breeds and cats too so please give these animals a chance. They get vet care and dental care and good food and loving homes. Please check that first. Seven animals is too much especially if you live in the city.
