First of all, Buddhist monks are not known for their violent uprisings. They are known for their stance on peace and peaceful protest. I think a violent uprising would have created even more casualties in Myanmar and would have created more suffering. Also, they wouldn't have nearly the kind of support of the world behind them like they do now if they were violent about the protest. In that sense, the peaceful protest was effective. I think additional pressure on China to push for change in Myanmar will help the citizens of Myanmar alot. I think the world is also taking a stance to boycott Myanmar. At least I hope I heard this right. The pressure has to be amped up in order to create democratic change in that country. The protests brought attention to the world of the plight of the Myanmar people. God bless them for their bravery and their sacrifice. These people have suffered a great deal under this terrible horrible regime.

In 1986 religous leaders stood side by side with impoverished people to demand the end of a brutal dictatorship in the Philippines. As many as 3 million gathered around the EDSA shrine to protect some senior level military defectors and demand democracy be restored.
They were successful without a drop of blood being spilt.
I am just hoping that piece of history can repeat itself now.

When your opponents are carrying rifles, It's not a good idea to be a Buddhist monk. Even wonderful people can be the victims of a massacre -- governments tend to prove that, time and time again.

No protest will be allowed to work, so we can see the brutality of this regime
