I've heard classical music helps you learn, but I can't recall how.

Music can be soothing or distracting depending on the type of music. If it becomes distracting, it interrupts studying. However I tend to hum along to songs I like without knowing it - so I would say it does not distract.

"what effect does music have on the brain?" I really believe different people would react in different ways. Some people can work in a very noisy environment and not be distracted and other need total quiet. Apply this to music.

Studies have been done on brain patterns when subjects have been listening to classical music. The positive effects seem to last an hour after they stop listening. I don't know the mechanics of how it works though.

Surprisingly, music distracts me too much. My geometry and anatomy teachers both love to play music when we're all working, and it's hard for me to get going on the assignment. I can get to working on it though; it just takes a while.

The only way music helps me focus & boosts my interest is when I'm reading or travelling, which is weird to practically every other teenager who worships music.
