He gave up 5 straight hits, and lost the game for the Padres. How people call him better than Mariano I will never know.

When has Trevor Hoffman ever closed out an important game?????? He has blown every important game when it counts..I'm sorry, I am biased, but whats right is right..Mo Riveria is no doubt the greatest closer of all time.

He can't pitch in big games. The guy blew a game in Milwaukee over the weekend, then he blew the game tonight, and the Padres' season is over. You can even go back farther, to the 1998 World Series. Hoffman came into the game in the 8th inning, and served up a three-run bomb to Scott Brosius. A 3-2 Padre lead became a 5-3 Yankee lead. Yankees up 3-0 and win the next night.

You have to admit that he's good, but a lot of those 500-plus saves are empty saves. It's a lot easier to save games in the weak NL West, where you are pitching to weak-hitting 8th hitters and pinch-hitters. Mariano Rivera is the best, every game he pitches is a big one, and almost every team in the American League is solid 1-9. There's no weak spot in most lineups. I don't think Hoffman could handle pitching to Ortiz and Ramirez back to back. Mariano has 6 saves against Boston this season, there's no way Hoffman would have that many.

Hoffman is very good, but hardly the greatest closer of all time, as Sports Illustrated said a few years ago,.

Nevertheless, it might be time for him to end it. When your out pitch is a changeup, having an 84 mph fastball won't cut it. Not enough of a speed difference. As for Hoffman: All-Star game? Blown save. WS game 3, 1998? Brosius 3-run homer. This year, Padres need to win one game out of their last three (including last night) to clinch the playoffs? Two blown saves. And he looked BAD last night. Not to say that Mariano has been perfect, because he's not. It just seems to me that Hoffman feels the pressure more. Could Mariano have thrived in San Diego? Given his makeup and pitches, I say yes. Could Hoffman have thrived in New York? Given his makeup and pitches, I say no chance. Hoffman WAS great. But in a big-game situation, he's shown he hasn't handled the pressure yet. Up two runs, bottom of the 13th, that game should have been closed out.

He probably already had plans for the off season, thats why he blew 2 games that if Pads won they go to the playoffs. I hope he retires. He has done a lot of good things, but you can't put him in with a 1 run lead. Sometimes he does really good, but you can't risk it. All the other relief pitchers on the padres did amazing.

He's basically over used! No question he blew two huge games (Colorado & Milwaukee)!

He is such an amazing pitcher, but can give up hits!

Too bad for him, almost 50 saves and he blows the two most important games of his career!

I spell an early retirement!

He gave up 3 hits actually, and I'm pretty sure that the all-time saves leader doesn't suck. But he did have a bad outing at the wrong time.

Yes he does suck. So I hope the Pads ship is but off to the Giants next year. I would take 524 saves of sucking, and 40 saves a year you suckage.

PS I am a Giants fan

Didn't have it tonight, and Coors Field is no pitcher's friend.

Hoffman on the mound was the right ending for this game, no matter how it finished. Future HOFers can take the heat when they go down in flames like this, or like Glavine did yesterday.

He has his slumps, this was his second BS in a row. Also, Colorado is not an easy place to pitch if you rely on anything other than vicious fastballs, as seen throughout this game alone.
