Official Baseball Rule 7.06(b) The catcher, without the ball in his possession, has no right to block the pathway of the runner attempting to score. The base line belongs to the runner and the catcher should be there only when he is fielding a ball or when he already has the ball in his hand.
Barrett was neither fielding the ball nor had the ball in his hand. Holliday was therefore safe.

Had their been two outs, maybe you could say that. But even if he's called out, there's still a runner in scoring position and you still have a struggling pitcher on the mound. Even the out Hoffman recorded was a well hit ball.
I think the ump was looking for two things:
Did Barrett hold on to the ball? A second and a half after the play he could tell he did not.
Would Holliday flinch back toward home plate, indicating he may have missed it? No flinch. That was enough for the ump to make up his mind right then and there. Once Barrett retrieved the ball and moved to apply the tag, the ump knew right there that if he was going to call him safe he couldn't wait a fraction longer. Yes, he got it wrong--but Holliday was wise enough not to flinch back (or maybe he was just worried if his nose was still attached). Once he saw the ball was in the dirt, the ump should have made the safe call right then, or made up his mind that he had missed the plate--without gaging his decision from Holliday's reaction. Not only that, but you gotta have some "gusto" in that call too! This ump had none. One of the best (if not the best) one-game playoffs in history--you gotta SWIPE those arms!
Yeah, he missed it--but the Rockies' bats were on fire that inning. Odds of scoring again were on their side even if he had got the call right.

Of COURSE that's how winners do it!!! And who cares if their win is marked with an asterisk...did anyone SEE Atkins home run?! (yeah, I call it a home run because it WAS) Kriffing umps were making horrible calls against the Rockies all night and who really gives a kriff if their win is marked with an asterisk! I earned it! They worked hard!

Holliday never touched home plate but he would have if his effort had not been blocked a player WITHOUT the ball. If the catcher had possession of the ball when the collision occured, Holliday would definitely had been out.
But you can't block the plate without the ball.
