I have been involved in musical theater for the majority of my life now and really can't imagine my life any other way. I am the practical actress and going to school with a fall back plan. That plan has always been to teach kindergarten in the unfortunate case that things don't work out as being a performer in musicals. I am currently going to a community college and am gearing up to transfer to either UCLA or Cal State Fullerton. As of lately I have become more and more aware of how called I feel to working in theater in New York. In the past I have always thought I would be perfectly happy and content teaching kindergarten but lately I have felt that I might go insane if I am unable to be part of the broadway family. I just want to be there, preferrably as an actress but if I never get cast I would still love to make a career out of working in some aspect of musicals and broadway. This is what leads me to my question. What careers are there in musicals?

Sounds like you're in SoCal? Have you auditioned at Disneyland? Plenty of live stage shows there and they seem to always have room for Fullerton students. If you're open to change, I don't know what community college you attend but Citrus in Azusa has an excellent performing arts program, but it can be overwhelming on the schedule.

As for broadway, if you're not in the shows and not working backstage, you could be an usher. Ushers get to see all the shows and I see some very happy ushers :-)

Best of luck to you!

Do any of the Broadway Theaters run Education Programmes? With your teaching and acting experience it may be a great job to do. I have worked in Theatre in the UK which had education attached - all to do with the play we were working on. It was great fun interacting and teaching all ages. The education officer I worked with, had been an actress and a teacher.
