Sorry for the gazillion questions, if you can answer any of them I'd really appreciate it...
I'm itchy, red and swollen down there, is that a yeast infection? what could have caused it? I just switched birth control pills a week ago, could that have something to do with it? also, (just curious) can a virgin get a yeast infection or does it have something to do with sex? do I need to go to the doctor right away or is there an OTC product I can use? do I need to abstain from sex until this goes away?

Yes, virgins can get yeast infections. They are not an STD. You could try an over-the-counter treatment for yeast infections. And YES, I would strongly suggest abstaining from sex as it would only aggravate the situation. Ouch!

Candida is the scientific name for yeast. It is a fungus that lives almost everywhere, including in your body. Usually, your immune system keeps yeast under control. If you are sick or taking antibiotics, it can multiply and cause an infection.

Yeast infections affect different parts of the body in different ways:

Thrush is a yeast infection that causes white patches in your mouth
Esophagitis is thrush that spreads to your esophagus, the tube that takes food from your mouth to your stomach. Esophagitis can make it hard or painful to swallow
Women can get vaginal yeast infections, causing itchiness, pain and discharge
Yeast infections of the skin cause itching and rashes
Yeast infections in your bloodstream can be life-threatening
Antifungal medicines eliminate yeast infections in most people. If you have a weak immune system, treatment might be more difficult.

The switching could have cause it. Anyone can get a yeast infection even babies! Going to the doctor would be your best bet, I wouldn't try and cure it yourself. You should seriously try and abstain from sex it's better for you and your partner! Good luck to you!

Oh, I love Diflucan, it's the only medication that make the my yeast go away for 12 months or so. If you do not have any symptoms, then you don't need to worry about it since that pill will do its job. If you had symptoms, you would notice the results within acouple of days.

Not every itchy vaginal discharge is yeast. There can be abnormal bacteria, lack of normal bacteria, and other infections. See your doctor, who will take a swab and find out exactly what it is.
