Throughput speed won't matter. In other words, 100Mbps Ethernet vs 480Mbps USB 2.0 vs 12Mbps USB 1.1 is irrelevant when you realize that your internet connection is 1.5Mbps.
However, depending on the Ethernet adapter and Broadband modem, one may use more processing power than the other. USB adapters could use a driver that takes more resources than say an Ethernet adapter. Therefore, and Ethernet adapter may appear to go faster than a USB.

An ethernet is specifically designed to work with a high speed modem. A USB cable is used for photo downloads alternative add on CR-CD-CDRW + and so forth. My external 500 GB hard drive is run by an ethernet cable. If using a USB make certain that it is a 2.0 high speed USB input.

The ethernet cable is much faster. Here, we took the USB cable off and put on an ethernet one and it seemed to move five or six times faster!

Either is capable of transferring more data than you're probably getting from the modem itself so you can go either way.
USB 2.0 is capable of up to 240 Mbps. Ethernet is capable of a maximum of 1 Gigabit, although 100 Mbps is most typical.
I personally prefer using Cat5 ethernet cable.

i personally prefer my wireless setup... but if you dont plan on doing that, go with the CAT-5 cable (ethernet) because it will have a higher data transfer rate than a USB cable

I suggest the Ethernet one so you'll have anm extra USB port available for you computer when you require it. Both work well.
